We Rented an Overseas Property In Italy for a Family Vacation

I was hopeful when my parents said that we may be traveling to Italy this year. I guess that my mom had always wanted to go and my dad said that he would take her if she could find an overseas property to rent for a week. My dad did not like staying in hotels; he said that if you are on vacation, you should not have to share your space with other people; you should feel like you are at home.

My mother got busy checking out overseas property websites and found one where you could type in everything thing that you wanted and the price you were willing to spend and they helped you find it, if it existed. About two weeks later when we were sitting at the dinner table, my mother announced that she had found the perfect little bungalow in Italy for us to rent for an entire week, and it was less than my father had said it had to be.

We left our home on a Thursday to catch our plane to Italy, to explore for an entire week. I was so excited, that I had not been able to sleep for days. When we arrived, we could not believe how nice our bungalow actually was. My dad was a little skeptical since my mom had done everything over the internet. The overseas property site that she had used, had impressed my parents by giving you exactly what you want, a good deal.

Owning property may not be the same as owning property in Greece

The law of the land in Greece clearly stipulates that if you buy property it does not mean owning property there. You might have acquired some property in Greece. But simply acquiring property will not help you. You can rent the property, sell it out or give it as a wedding present.

You must establish that you really care about the property. You should visit the property as and when possible. At least you must visit the properties at least once in three years. Conversely you may have some one to take care of the property. Some proof should be there so that it will be established that you are taking care of the house and it is in fact your property.

You can also put up some electronic alarm system and you can come over and change the system in a couple of years periodically. If you are buying lands in Greece then you must count the trees on it to find out whether there are new trees on it. If you plant one yourself, it could be a proof in the future that you are really looking after the property. The law is identical in mainland and islands like Patmos.

The peculiarity in Greek Law is that the squatter will not have to inform that the owner is moved and the squatter has taken over the property. It is the responsibility of the owner to protect his property.
